JENKINTOWN, PA—October 17 will be the final regular season game for seven Manor College (1-8-0) sophomore women's soccer players, as the Blue Jays play the Lackawanna College Falcons (1-10-0) in a non-conference matchup at 4:00 p.m.
The seven players are as follows: forward Deja Fogg; midfielders Brianna Givens, Erica Foreman, Gina Sgrillo, and Jennifer Wilson; center back Julia Rymarczuk and right back Nicole Suwala.
Manor College first-year Head Coach Tom Gangi on this year's women's soccer sophomore class: "I can't say enough about these young ladies. It would have been easy for these girls to give up at just quit our program. Instead, they amazed me by providing great leadership and terrific attitudes. I enjoyed playing and teaching soccer to these sophomores. Our bus rides were always entertaining and you would have never known we lost at those away games. I will always remember and thank these players for making our first season enjoyable and to me a success."
Fogg played in five games (four starts) this season. Gangi on Fogg: "Deja was a mainstay at all our games and practices. Deja, like the others, could have quit and giving up, but, she stuck with it even playing through some serious injuries. She provided leadership and a quick wit to keep us loose. Deja was also one of the first to come out and support our team from the beginning. Without her, our program might have never got started. I will always thank her for that."
Givens started both of her games this season. Gangi on Givens: "Brianna is a solid player who gave her all the two games she played for us this season. We would have won more games if Brianna played more for us."
Foreman is one of three Blue Jays to have played and started in all nine games. She is second on the team in goals (four), assists (two), points (10), and shots on goal (14). Foreman scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner at home versus Montgomery County Community College, 4-3, on September 28. It was Manor's first victory since the program was reinstated after a four-year absence. Gangi on Foreman: "Erica was one of the leaders of this team. She, like everyone on the team, never gave up when it would have been easy to do so, and, played her hardest, playing every minute of every game this season. She knows the game of soccer and I took her thoughts and suggestions into consideration because she is a very smart player. Erica scored our most important goal of our season, her game winner versus Montgomery County."
Rymarczuk played and started in three games this season. She scored an unassisted game-tying goal versus Montgomery County on September 26. Gangi on Rymarczuk: "Julia was our most experienced player at the college level. Her 40-yard blast versus Montgomery County was a very important goal for our program; it lead to us winning our first game in overtime. Because of school work and her demanding schedule, we could only use Julia for three games. It is Student-Athlete, not Athlete-Student, and I understand and support that."
Sgrillo played and started in three games this season. She scored two goals and contributed an assist in a road contest at Lackawanna on September 19. Gangi on Sgrillo: "Unfortunately, Gina got hurt early in the season. She continued to play through her injuries and played very well for as long as she could. To me, this shows outstanding character and leadership. When Gina is healthy and on her game, her skill level is very high and it shows on the field. It's a shame she could not play more games for us because she would have made a difference in most of the games. The one thing I will always remember about Gina besides her play, is her laugh, it is heartfelt and contagious. I could do nothing but join her in her excitement and also laugh."
Suwala started and played in seven games this season, including as a goalkeeper versus Region XX Division I Harford Community College on September 16. Gangi on Suwala: "Nicole is the definition of dedication. Nicole made almost every practice and game. She actually broke her wrist while playing goalie but continued to support our team on and off the field. She did all she could to get back on the field as soon as possible, only missing two games. She has come a long way from the first practice our team had until now. Her improvement is very noticeable. Nicole has calm demeanor and level head which will help her in the future, which is bright."
Wilson started and played in eight games this season. Her assist help set up Foreman's overtime game-winning goal versus Montgomery County on September 28. She also scored a goal in a September 30 home game versus Lehigh Carbon Community College. Gangi on Wilson: "Jen is an intense, outstanding player with great skills. Jen knew one way to play. All out, all the time. That drive and intensity is something you can't teach and will serve Jen well in her future. Being that intense, Jen has a great sense of humor off the field, which we all enjoyed."
The Blue Jays are playing in its first full season since 2012.
