MANOR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LOSES TO HARCUM COLLEGE

JENKINTOWN, PA—Harcum College (14-10 Overall, 12-2 Region XIX Division II) freshman guard Emily Brown came off the bench to score 16 points as the Bears defeated the Manor College Blue Jays (11-9, 7-8), 73-49.

 

The Bears never trailed during the game.  Harcum led as much as by 10-2 with 4:48 left in the first quarter on a sophomore guard Lynadia Whiting reverse layup off of a Manor turnover.  The Blue Jays got within 10-5 on a freshman guard Alize Felton (New Castle, DE/William Penn) three-point basket, with an assist by sophomore guard/forward Jaquay Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Audenreid), with 3:57 remaining.  The Bears took its biggest lead of the opening quarter (14-5) on Whiting's jump shot with 1:55 left.  Harcum led 17-9 after the first.

 

Harcum expanded its lead in the second quarter.  Gresham's free throws with 9:10 remaining gave the Bears its first double-digit advantage of the game (19-9).  Freshman forward/center Alliya Austin's (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) free throw got Manor within 21-13 with 6:13 left.  This was as close as the Blue Jays got for the remainder of the game.  Harcum answered with an 11-2 run over the next 3:05 and took its biggest lead of the first half (32-15) on a sophomore guard Yurlies Estrada free throw with 3:08 remaining.  The Blue Jays got within 12 (34-22) with 0:56.9 left on freshman guard Kiara Stoval's (Chester, PA/Ursuline Academy [DE]) free throws.  The Bears outscored the Blue Jays, 19-13, in the second, and led 36-22 at halftime.

 

The Bears continued to increase its advantage in the third quarter.  Estrada's offensive rebound and jump shot with 1:26 remaining gave Harcum a 53-33 lead.  The Bears outscored the Blue Jays, 20-11, in the quarter, and led 56-33 after three.

 

Harcum outscored Manor in the fourth quarter, 17-16, and in the second half, 37-27.  Brown led both teams with 12 points in the second half.  Felton paced Manor with 10 points in the second half.

 

Individual Statistical Leaders: Felton led the Blue Jays with 16 points.  Austin and sophomore forward/center Kelicia Brown (Philadelphia, PA/Lincoln) scored 11 points each.  Brown and Williams paced Manor with eight rebounds each.  Williams led the Blue Jays with six assists and four steals.  Her six assists paced both teams.

 

Gresham contributed a "double-double" with 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Bears.  Whiting added 10 points, seven steals (which led both teams), and shared the team lead with Brown with five assists.  Estrada came off the bench and pulled down 14 rebounds, along with Gresham, to pace both squads.

 

Series Record (since the 2005-2006 season): Harcum leads the season series 18-7 and won eight straight versus Manor.  The Blue Jays are 5-7 at home versus the Bears.

 

Next Game: Manor travels to Region XIX Division II Rowan College at Burlington County 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 1. 2018 in Pemberton, New Jersey.  The Blue Jays are 12-11 versus the Barons, including 4-6 on the road.  Manor has won two straight meetings at Rowan College at Burlington.  The Barons won the previous meeting at Manor, 68-47, on December 14, 2017.

 

Next Home Game: Manor hosts Region XIX Division II Mercer County Community College 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 8. 2018.  The Blue Jays are 14-5 versus the Vikings, including 9-0 at home.  Manor has won the last eight meetings overall.  The Blue Jays won the previous meeting on the road, 57-44, on November 14, 2017, in Trenton, New Jersey.
