MANOR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LOSES TO  NATIONALLY-RANKED HARFORD COMMUNITY COLLEGE

JENKINTOWN, PA—Harford Community College (6-0 Overall) sophomore guard Ryan Holder led both teams with 18 points as the Fighting Owls defeated the Manor College Blue Jays (4-2), 112-51, in a non-conference match-up.

 

Harford entered the game ranked 20th in the 2017-2018 NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Preseason Poll.  This is also the first time Manor has played a NJCAA Division I opponent.

 

Manor took an early 3-2 lead on a three-point basket by sophomore forward/center Kellicia Brown's (Philadelphia, PA) three-point basket, with an assist by freshman guard Alize Felton (New Castle, DE) with 8:17 left in the opening quarter.  The Blue Jays scored on its next possession on a freshman forward/center Alliya Austin (Pottstown, PA) layup, with an assist by Brown with 7:50 remaining.  However, Harford took the lead for good (7-5) on sophomore forward Dahnye Redd's jumper off of a missed shot with 6:48 left.  The Fighting Owls took its largest lead of the quarter (18-9) with 0:41.2 remaining on a sophomore guard Tianna Swearinger layup off of a Blue Jay turnover.  Harford finished the quarter on a 9-2 run in the final 5:59 and led 18-10 after the first quarter.

 

The closest Manor got to Harford for the remainder of the game, was 18-13 with 8:30 left on freshman guard Kiara Stoval's (Chester, PA) three-point basket on a sophomore forward/guard Jaquay Williams' (Philadelphia, PA) assist.  Harford responded and scored 12 straight points over a 2:10 stretch.  This run was finished off by a sophomore guard Adrienne Jones three-point basket, with an assist by freshman guard Elaija Demeza.  The Fighting Owls finished the quarter on a 17-3 run in the final 5:16 of the quarter and led 52-19 at halftime.

 

The Fighting Owls scored 13 straight points start the third quarter.  The run was completed by Jones' three-point basket with 6:30 left in the third.  Harford scored 14 consecutive points between 6:42 and 3:18 remaining in the quarter.  The Fighting Owls led 87-29 after three quarters.

 

Harford outscored Manor, 25-22, in the fourth quarter.

 

Individual Statistical Leaders: Austin led Manor with 14 points and shared the team lead with Brown with eight rebounds.  Stoval scored 12 points and Brown contributed 11.  Felton added seven assists and four steals.

 

Holder also had a "double-double" with 12 rebounds to go with her team-leading 18 points.  Redd paced both teams with 21 rebounds.  Freshman forward Jewel Porter and freshman guard Shantel McCray-Cheeks contributed 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively.  Sophomore guard Shawnkia McCallum led both teams with 13 assists and sophomore forward Desitnee McQueen paced both squads with five steals.

 

Series Record: This is the first meeting between the two schools.

 

Next Game: The Blue Jays travel to Division III Brookdale Community College (4-4 Overall) 5:00 p.m. Thursday, November 30 in Lincroft, New Jersey.  The Blue Jays are 0-2 overall and on the road versus the Jersey Blues.  Manor lost at Brookdale in its previous meeting, 42-41, on February 7, 2017.

 

Next Home Game: Manor hosts Lackawanna College (8-0 Overall, 5-0 Region XIX Division II) 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 2 in a Region XIX Division II match-up.  The Blue Jays are 8-11 overall (4-5 at home) versus the Falcons.  Lackawanna swept the 2016-2017 season series.  The Blue Jays lost, 76-68 in double overtime at the Falcons on November 12, 2016 and at home, 73-50, on January 28, 2017.  Lackawanna has won six straight in this series and seven of eight overall.  Manor last lost the last four home meetings versus Lackawanna.
