Manor College Women’s Basketball Roars Past Raritan Valley Community College

JENKINTOWN, PA—Manor College (11-8 Overall, 6-7 Region XIX Division II) freshman guard Tiana Garvin (Philadelphia, PA/Bodine) scored 28 points (season-high) and pulled down 13 rebounds as they routed Raritan Valley Community College (6-11, 2-10), 104-62. 

 

This the first time Manor has scored 100 points since joining the NJCAA for the 2008-2009 season.  This is also the most points they have scored overall and at home since statistics were kept in the 2002-2003 season.

 

After Manor opened the scoring on Garvin's layup with 8:43 remaining in the opening quarter, Raritan Valley responded by scoring 13 straight points.  Lions' freshman guard Megan Mack sank a three-point basket with 5:49 left completed the early run.  It also Raritan Valley its largest lead of the game (16-4).  The Blue Jays answered by 24-9 for the remainder of the quarter until Mack made her sixth three-point basket of the quarter at the buzzer.  The Lions led 28-24 after the first quarter and Mack led both teams with 18 points.

 

Raritan Valley maintained a single-digit lead nearly halfway into the second quarter.  Hunt's layup with 6:09 left in the quarter gave the Lions a 39-34 lead.  Manor held Raritan Valley scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, scoring 11 consecutive points.  Sophomore forward Shawn Dowd's (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) jump shot with 1:45 remaining in the first half gave the Blue Jays the lead for good.  Manor outscored Raritan Valley in the quarter, 21-11, and led at halftime, 45-41.  Garvin led the Blue Jays with 15 points.

 

The Blue Jays dominated the Lions in the third quarter and put the game out of reach.  Sophomore center Etreece Adams' (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep) layup with 9:02 remaining gave Manor its first double-digit lead of the game (49-39).  The Blue Jays began the third quarter on a 20-6 run after Adams made another free throw with 4:15 left in the quarter.  After sophomore guard Lauren Ferretti made a layup, Manor held Raritan Valley to one basket over the remaining 3:15 of the third. They went on a 17-2 run and outscored the Lions in the third, 37-14.  Manor led after three quarters 82-53. 

 

Manor opened up a 30-point lead (83-53) on Garvin's free throw with 9:19 left in the final quarter.  Her free throw with 3:30 remaining gave the Blue Jays a 40-point lead (99-59).  Freshman forward Kennedy Telfair's (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) basket with 2:44 put Manor over the 100-point plateau.    Garvin's layup with 0:35.6 completed the Blue Jays' scoring and gave the team its largest lead of the game (104-62).  Manor outscored Raritan Valley in the fourth, 22-9, and, 59-23, in the second half.  Garvin led both teams in the second half with 13 points. Hunt paced Raritan Valley's scoring in the second half with 10.

 

The Blue Jays held the Lions to 37.3% shooting overall from the field.  Manor outrebounded Raritan Valley 42 to 22 and forced the Lions to commit 27 turnovers.

 

Garvin registered her sixth "double-double" in points and rebounds.  Dowd was perfect (10-10) from the free throw line and scored 16 points. Freshman guard Sierra Liggon (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) scored a season-high 14 points off the bench.  She also made four three-point field goals.  Freshmen Chyna Steele (guard) (York, PA/York) scored 11 points and Jaquay Williams (guard) (Philadelphia, PA/Audenried) came off the bench to hand out five assists.

 

Hunt led Raritan Valley with 25 points, six rebounds, and six assists.  Mack added 19 points and made six three-point baskets for the Lions.

 

The victory improves Manor's home mark to 4-3 on the season. All four of Blue Jays' home victories have been by 36 or more points.

 

The Blue Jays swept by the Lions in the regular season for the first time since the 2010-2011 season. Manor is 10-0 overall (6-0 at home) versus Raritan Valley.

 

The Blue Jays' next game is at Region XIX Division III Brookdale Community College (16-6) in Lincroft, New Jersey 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2017.  Since 2002-2003, the Blue Jays are 0-1 overall versus the Jersey Blues. Manor lost its only matchup at Brookdale, 66-59 in double overtime, on January 8, 2013. 

 

Manor's next home game is versus Region XIX Division II Delaware Technical   Community College-Stanton 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 9, 2017.  The Blue Jays are 13-6 overall and 7-2 at home versus the Spirit.  Manor has won seven in a row and eight of the previous nine in this series. They defeated Stanton in its previous matchup on the road, 74-52, on November 10, 2016.  The Blue Jays defeated the Spirit at home, 83-56, on December 10, 2015. Manor has won three straight at home in this series.
