Manor College Women’s Basketball Loses to Lackawanna College

JENKINTOWN, PA—Lackawanna College (12-7 Overall, 10-2 Region XIX Division II) freshman guard Ciani Ballard scored 17 points coming off the bench as they defeated Manor College (10-7, 5-6), 73-50.  Freshman guard Chyna Steele (York, PA/York) led the Blue Jays with 14 points.

 

Manor was held scoreless until Steele converted a pair of free throws with 5:36 left in the opening quarter.  The Blue Jays scored 13 straight points and went on a 15-2 run during 3:20 stretch.  They opened up its largest lead (15-6) when freshman forward Kennedy Telfair (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) sank a jump shot with 2:16 remaining in the first quarter. Lackawanna responded and went a 10-2 run over the remainder of the quarter, and closed the gap to one point (17-16).  The Blue Jays led 17-16 after the first quarter.  

 

Manor took its last lead of the game when Steele made a three-point basket with 9:50 left in the second quarter (20-16).  Lackawanna responded again and scored eight straight points during a 2:18 stretch.  Freshman forward Tiana Garvin (Philadelphia, PA/Bodine) tied the contest at 24 with 5:33 remaining in the second.  The Falcons took the lead for good on its next possession (27-24) on Ballard's three-point basket with 5:24 left in the half.  The basket began a Lackawanna 13-2 run during a 4:18 stretch and gave the team its largest lead of the first half (37-26).  Ballard scored 11 of the team's 13 points during this period.  The Blue Jays scored the final points of the quarter, but still trailed at halftime, 37-29. Ballard led both teams with 15 points and Steele paced Manor with 10.

 

Lackawanna built on its halftime lead in the third quarter, scoring eight straight points in the first 3:05 and opened up a 46-29 lead.  The Blue Jays were held scoreless until Garvin made a pair of free throws with 4:36 left in the third.  They went on a mini 6-2 run in the next 2:46 and closed the gap to nine points (48-39).  The Falcons led 51-39 after three quarters.

 

Manor got within 10 points in the fourth quarter (51-41) on sophomore guard Dayzha Davis' (Philadelphia, PA/Mastery North) layup with 8:39 remaining.  Lackawanna scored six straight and opened up a 57-41 lead with 5:59 left in the game.  The Blue Jays responded going another mini run (6-1) and got within 58-47 with 4:05 remaining on Garvin's layup off of a Falcons' turnover.  Lackawanna closed out the game on a 15-3 run and held Manor without a field goal made.  The Falcons outscored the Blue Jays 22-11 in the fourth quarter and 36-21 in the second half.  Freshman forward Quieterriua Gross led both teams with 10 points in the second half.

 

 

In addition to Steele, Garvin scored 13 points for Manor.  Steele has scored in double-figures 10 times in 15 games played.   Garvin has scored 10 or points in a game 11 times in 15 games.

 

In addition to Ballard, freshman forward Ariana Sanders scored 14 points and blocked three shots.  Sophomore guard Alex Jackson added 10 and had four assists. Freshman guard Tearja Hartley pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked three shots. Gross contributed a "double-double" off the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

 

The loss evens Manor home mark to 3-3 on the season.  The Blue Jays' 50 points is lowest this season and the fewest since February 13, 2016 (51 at Northern Virginia Community College).  The 23-point home loss is the largest margin since January 28, 2016 (81-61 versus Harcum College).

 

The Blue Jays were swept by the Falcons in the regular season for the third straight season. Manor is 8-11 overall (4-4 at home) versus Lackawanna and has lost six straight overall and seven of eight. The 23-point loss is the largest at home in the season series and overall since December 4, 2010 (81-60 at Lackawanna). The Blue Jays last defeated the Falcons on February 8, 2014 (55-52 at Lackawanna). They last defeated Lackawanna at home on February 14, 2013 (89-85). 

 

Manor finished January with a 3-2 record. They were 4-2 in January, 2016.

 

The Blue Jays' next game is at Region XIX Division II Harcum College (17-6, 8-2) in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2017.  Since 2005-2006, Manor is 7-15 overall versus Harcum, including five straight losses. The Blue Jays last defeated the Bears on December 9, 2014 (70-66 at home).  They are 2-7 on the road versus the Bears, including three straight losses. Manor's last road victory at Harcum was on January 24, 2013 (90-86 in overtime). Manor lost in its previous matchup, 92-85, on November 29, 2016. 

 

Manor's next home game is versus Region XIX Division II Raritan Valley Community College Noon Saturday, February 4, 2017.  Manor is 9-0 overall and 5-0 at home versus the Lions.  They defeated Raritan Valley in its previous matchup, 90-42, on November 15, 2016.  The Blue Jays defeated the Lions home, 90-52, on November 15, 2014.
