Manor College Women’s Basketball Routs Valley Forge Military College

JENKINTOWN, PA—Manor College (7-5 Overall, 5-4 Region XIX Division II) freshman guard Kalima Daniels (Queens, NY/Boys & Girls) scored 19 points as they defeated Valley Forge Military College (7-4, 4-3), 70-44.

 

The Blue Jays opened the game scoring the first 16 points of the game before, freshman guard Sydney Barrow sank a jump shot with 4:21 left in the opening quarter.  Manor led after the first quarter, 21-4.   The Trojans' four points are fewest the Blue Jays have allowed in the first quarter this season. 

 

Manor expanded to its largest lead of the first half (32-9) on freshman guard Shaquaya Matthews' (Philadelphia, PA/Master North) jumper with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter.  Valley Forge Military responded and scored 10 straight points and closed the gap to 13 (32-19) with 0:59 left in the first half on freshman forward Teeara Smith's jump shot. Defensively, the Trojans held the Blue Jays to one field goal over the final 4:20 of the half.  Manor outscore Valley Forge Military in the second quarter 16-15, and led at halftime, 37-19. Daniels led both teams with 14 points. 

 

Valley Forge Military continued to cut into Manor's lead in the third quarter.  They opened the quarter on a 6-2 run in the first 5:18 and cut the Blue Jays' lead to 11 (39-28).  Freshman guard Tykeera Murray converted a layup, with an assist by Barrow with 4:42 left capped off the Trojans' run.  Manor scored nine straight points that was topped off by freshman guard's Chyna Steele's (York, PA/York) layup with 1:50 left in the third.  They expanded its lead to 23 and finished the quarter on a 14-2 run.  The Blue Jays held the Trojans to one field goal over the final 4:42 of the quarter.  Manor outscored Valley Forge Military, 16-11, and led after the third quarter, 53-30.

 

Manor added to its lead in the fourth quarter, scoring nine straight points.  Sophomore center Etreece Adams' (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep) layup, on a freshman guard Jaquay Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Audenried) assist with 5:32 left in the fourth, capped of the run and gave the Blue Jays its largest lead of the game (62-30).  Manor outscored Valley Forge Military in the fourth, 17-14, and 33-25 in the second half.  Steele and Trojans' freshman forward Beverly Kum scored 11 points each in the second half.

 

Daniels' 19 points tied a season high for the fourth time this season. She also scored 19 at Lackawanna College on November 12, versus Union County on December 10, and versus Bucks County Community College on December 15.  She also led Manor with six assists.  Steele scored 17 and paced the Blue Jays with nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Matthews came off the bench to contribute 14 points. 

 

Kum led Valley Forge Military with 17 points and Murray contributed 11.  The Trojans scored a season-low 44 points.

 

Manor finished December, 4-1, after a 3-4 November.  They were 4-4 before the Holiday Break last year.

 

The Blue Jays are 6-0 overall and 3-0 at home versus the Trojans. Manor has won every matchup by 20 or more points. 

 

The Blue Jays' next game is at home versus the County College of Morris (0-6) 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017.  Manor is 15-1 overall and 7-1 at home versus the Titans.  They swept the County College of Morris during the 2015-2016 season, 70-39 (November 7, 2015 at home) and, 69-40 (February 16, 2016 on the road).
