Manor College Women’s Basketball Defeats Bucks County Community College

JENKINTOWN, PA—Manor College (6-5) freshmen Tiana Garvin (forward) (Philadelphia, PA/Bodine) and Kalima Daniels (guard) (Queens, NY/Boys & Girls) scored 19 points each as they defeated NJCAA Division III Bucks County Community College (2-8), 74-12.

 

The Blue Jays trailed once (3-2) on Centurions' freshman guard Macy Morris' scoop shot and free throw conversion with 9:04 left in the opening quarter.  Manor took the lead for good (5-3) on its next possession on Daniels' three-point basket on a sophomore forward Shawn Dowd (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) assist with 8:53 remaining in the first quarter.  The closest Bucks County got to Manor was four points (9-5) on another Morris scoop shot with 6:40 left.  The Blue Jays finished the quarter scoring the next 20 points, including 14 of 16 off of layups.  Eight of the last 10 points in the quarter were scored by freshman guard Shaquaya Matthews (Philadelphia, PA/Mastery North).  Manor tied a season-high, scoring 29 points and led 29-5 after the first quarter.  The Blue Jays also scored 29 at Rowan College at Burlington County on November 8.   

 

Manor scored the first six points of the second quarter before Bucks County freshman guard Lavender Nambo made an acrobatic jump shot with 7:22 left in the quarter.  It was the Centurions first basket in 9:18.  The Blue Jays scored 26 straight points between Centurion baskets. Manor finished the half scoring 14 consecutive points and led at halftime, 49-7.  They outscored Bucks County, 20-2, in the second quarter.  The Blue Jays also scored 49 first half points at Rowan College at Burlington County on November 8.  Manor's 42-point halftime lead is the largest this season.  The Centurions' seven points was the fewest the Blue Jays allowed in the first half this season. Garvin led with 12 points and Daniels added 11.

 

The Blue Jays shut out the Centurions in the third quarter, 10-0 and led 59-7.  Manor previously held Rowan College at Burlington County scoreless in the fourth on November 8.

 

Bucks County freshman forward Vanessa Rich's jump shot ended Manor's run of 24 straight points with 9:12 left in the fourth quarter.  It was the Centurions' first basket in 18:10.  The Blue Jays finished the game on a 12-2 run and outscored the Centurions in the fourth quarter 15-5 and 25-5 in the second half. Bucks County's five second-half points was the fewest Manor allowed in the second half this season. 

 

Daniels' 19 points tied a season high for the third time this season. She also scored 19 at Lackawanna College on November 12 and versus Union County on December 10. Garvin paced Manor with nine rebounds and Dowd pulled down seven.  Sophomore center Etreece Adams (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep) came off the bench to score 10 points. Freshman guard Chyna Steele (York, PA/York) contributed five assists.

 

Rich pulled down a personal season-best 12 rebounds for Bucks County.  Her dozen rebounds led both teams.

 

Manor shot a season high 53.3% from the field and outrebounded Bucks County 41 to 30.  Defensively, the Blue Jays also held the Centurions to 18.5% from the field and forced them to commit 37 turnovers.  Bucks County's 18.5 field goal percentage was the lowest Manor allowed this season.

 

Manor's 62-point victory was the fourth-highest overall and second-most at home since records were kept in the 2002-2003 season. The Blue Jays defeated Delaware Technical Community College-Stanton at home by 63 points on January 18, 2011 (99-36).  This is also the largest victory overall and at home versus a Division III school.  Manor defeated Montgomery County Community College at home by 58 points on January 10, 2015 (98-40).  This was also the last time the Blue Jays played a home game versus a Division III program.

 

This was the first matchup since both schools joined the NJCAA.  The Blue Jays are 11-5 overall and 3-0 at home versus NCJAA Division III schools since 2008-2009, including eight straight. 

 

Manor's next home game is versus Region XIX Division II Valley Forge Military College (7-3 Overall, 3-3 Region XIX Division II) 1:00 p.m. December 18.  The Blue Jays are 5-0 overall and 2-0 at home versus the Trojans. Manor swept Valley Forge Military during the 2015-2016 season.  They won on the road on November 17, 2015, 77-54 and at home on February 6, 2015, 77-54.
