JENKINTOWN, PA—Manor College (5-4 Overall, 4-3 NJCAA Region XIX Division II) sophomores Shawn Dowd (forward) (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) and Etreece Adams (center) (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep) scored 14 points each as they routed Mercer County Community College (3-7, 1-6) for its first home win of the season, 90-40.
The Blue Jays and Vikings played a close game in the first quarter. Manor led after the opening quarter, 17-11. Adams' layup in the paint on an assist by freshman guard Chyna Steele (York, PA/York) with about ten seconds left in the second quarter gave Manor 42-22 halftime lead. The Blue Jays finished final 3:31 of the first half on an 11-3 run.
Manor erupted in the third quarter. They scored 19 straight points over a 3:22 stretch. The run began with freshman forward Tiana Garvin's (Philadelphia, PA/Bodine) layup with 6:52 remaining and it was finished off by an Adams layup with 3:30 left in the quarter (67-24). A Mercer County layup by freshman forward Cassie Filipowicz with 3:05 remaining stopped Manor's string of consecutive points. Freshman forward Kennedy Telfair's (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) basket finished the Blue Jays' third quarter scoring with about 0:31 left. Altogether, Manor outscored Mercer County 32-6 in the third quarter. The Blue Jays' 32 points in a quarter are a season-high.
The Blue Jays began the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run in the first 4:05. Freshman guard Shaquaya Matthews (Philadelphia, PA/Mastery North) began and ended the run to the start the quarter. During this run, her layup with 6:13 left in the game gave Manor an 82-31 lead. Filipowicz' layup with 5:06 remaining stopped the Blue Jays' run. Garvin's layup in the paint off of a miss with 2:59 left gave Manor its largest lead of the game (88-33). Freshman guard Jaquay Williams' (Philadelphia, PA/Audernried) jump shot with 0:33.9 remaining finished the Blue Jays' scoring. Manor outscored Mercer County in the fourth quarter, 16-12. They outscored the Vikings in the second half, 48-18. Manor's 50-point home victory is the most since January 10, 2015 (98-40 versus NJCAA Division III Montgomery County Community College).
In addition to Dowd and Adams, four more Blue Jays scored in double-figures: Garvin and Telfair contributed a dozen points each. Steele added 11, while Matthews contributed 10. Filipowicz led the Vikings with 12 and sophomore guard Amirah Terry scored 10.
Since 2008-2009, Manor is 12-5 overall versus Mercer County, including six straight victories. They are 9-0 at home versus the Vikings. The Blue Jays have won last the five match-ups in double-digits.
Manor's next home game is versus Region XIX Division II Union County College 1:00 p.m. December 10. The Blue Jays are 5-11 overall and 2-6 versus the Owls at home. Manor has lost five straight games overall versus Union County. They last defeated the Owls on November 16, 2013 (52-44). Manor has also lost six consecutive at home versus Union County. They last won at home versus the Owls on February 9, 2011 (83-60). Union County is the two-time defending Region XIX Division II Postseason Tournament Champion. The Owls were ranked 20th in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll.
