With only a seven-point difference, the Manor College Lady Blue Jays fought until the very end last Saturday afternoon against Essex County College. With a final score of 60-67, the Lady Blue Jays came back strong in the second half after being down nearly 18 points.
Team captain, Kira Ogden, says, “The first half of the game we started of the game really well, then Essex started to press us and it was difficult for us to get the ball up the court.”
The Lady Jays let Essex CC score 35 points on them, while netting 25 themselves. Going into the half, Odgen said, “Our team was playing together and although we were down, we were finding that rhythm that we lost before Christmas break.”
Assistant Coach Kiesha King comments on how each position played together saying, “We got good production from our point guard position. We do need to work on the speed of our game, and be a little more competitive. And our forwards really battled on the boards giving us multiple scoring opportunities. Overall, everyone played a quality role.”
For the Lady Jays, it was a team effort that brought them back into the game during the second half, outscoring Essex CC by 3 points, giving them 35 points in total for the second half with Essex CC netting 32.
At the end of the day, Essex CC won the game by 7 points, but it was a tight game for the Lady Jays, and a game that left the Jays feeling positive about their teammates.
King says, “We have to compete every minute we're on the floor. We dug ourselves a hole early in the game and expended a ton of energy getting out. In the end, we ran out of time and gas.”
