Raritan Valley Outlast Manor in Overtime, 99-87

A pair of Raritan Valley Community College sophomore forwards—Marvin Crawford (33 points) and Kristian Svendsen (20 off the bench) helped the Golden Lions (17-4, 11-2 Region XIX Division II) defeat the Manor College Blue Jays (10-12, 5-7), 99-87, in overtime. Two of Manor’s sophomore guards, Avery Brown (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Mark Perez (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) scored 23 and 15 points, respectively in the loss.

 Crawford scored six of Raritan Valley’s first nine points in overtime that included the layup at 88-86 with 3:36 remaining. It gave the Golden Lions the lead for good. Svendsen drained a three-point basket to extend the lead to 91-86 with 3:10 left. Sophomore guard Desmond Cotton finished the scoring for Raritan Valley on free throws with 37.6 and 18.7 seconds left, respectively. Manor’s last field goal was on a sophomore forward Eric Trowery (Coatesville, PA/Strath Haven) layup that tied game at 86 with 3:42 left. Raritan Valley outscored Manor 17-5 in the extra period, including an 11-1 stretch over the final 3:42 of the overtime.
Raritan Valley led early as much as by 11 points (15-4), following a Cotton layup with 15:32 left in the first half. Manor went on a 20-8 over the next 6:17 and took its initial lead of the game, 24-23, with 8:59 remaining in the first half. Perez gave the Blue Jays its first lead on a coast-to-coast layup. However, the Golden Lions retook the lead on sophomore guard Danny Scaramella’s layup with 8:43 left. Trowery’s tip-in provided the Blue Jays with its second and last lead, 26-25, with 8:05 remaining. Crawford answered with a dunk with 7:52 left. It gave the Golden Lions a 27-26 lead. Raritan Valley never trailed the Manor for the remainder of the game. The Blue Jays got as close to one point, 29-28, with 7:20 remaining on a Perez layup. Between 8:05 and 6:00, the Golden Lions went on a 9-2 run that was capped off by a sophomore forward Hanif Holloway dunk. It gave Raritan Valley a 34-28 lead. Brown sank a pair of free throws to close the gap to three (36-33) with 2:46 to go. Raritan Valley finished the first half on a 12-2 run that was completed by a Scaramella layup with 0:25 left in the half. The Golden Lions led at the half, 44-35.
 Manor chipped away at Raritan Valley’s nine-point lead in the second half. Trowery’s jumper with 16:01 left narrowed the deficit to 53-50. Two three-point baskets by Brown (with 13:39 and 11:47 to go) closed it two (59-57 and 62-60, respectively). The first of Brown’s three-point field goals this sequence was off an inbounds play. The Golden Lions responded with seven straight points that was capped off with sophomore guard Deshawn Batts’ jumper with 10:24 left in regulation and a 69-60 lead. It was the first nine-point lead for Raritan Valley since leading 46-37 with 18:56 left in the second half. Scaramella’s layup with 5:52 remaining gave the Golden Lions another nine-point lead at 77-69. The Blue Jays scored seven straight over the next 1:53 and closed the deficit to one (77-76) with 3:59 left on a Perez layup. Sophomore forward Christopher Lawhorn’s (Philadelphia, PA/Friere Charter) floater with 1:26 remaining got Manor within two (80-78). Manor got within two again on Brown’s dunk off of a missed field goal attempt with 45.2 seconds to go in regulation.  On Raritan Valley’s next possession, they committed a turnover on a bad pass that went out-of-bounds with 34.8 to go. Freshman guard Billy Shank (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann Goretti) sank two free throws with 7.0 remaining to tie the score at 82. Trowery stole the ball off of on an inbounds play with 2.6 left and nearly made an off-balance three-point basket at the end of regulation.
 In addition to Brown (23) and Perez (15), freshman forward Jamier Hughes (Philadelphia, PA/Cross Keys) contributed 14 points. Shank added 13 points and Trowery scored 11.  Adding to Crawford’s 33 and Svendsen’s 20 for Raritan Valley, Cotton, Holloway, and Scaramella registered 11 points apiece for the Golden Lions.
 

Despite the defeat, Manor still has a winning home record (6-5) with one game remaining.  The Blue Jays will play three its next final four regular season games on the road.  Their next game will be at the Lackawanna College Falcons (10-16, 6-6) in Scranton, PA 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 8.  In its previous meeting, Manor defeated Lackawanna, 105-92, on November 23, 2013.  The Blue Jays final regular season home game will be against the Essex County College Wolverines 3:00 p.m.  Saturday, February 15.
