Manor College sophomore guard Avery Brown (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored five points in the final 1:20 to help the Blue Jays (9-10) defeat the University of Pennsylvania Junior Varsity squad, 75-74, at the historic Palestra in Philadelphia.
Brown’s floater in the lane with 1:20 gave Manor the
lead for good, 71-69. It followed a steal by the Blue Jays with
1:54 remaining in the game. Brown also sank free throws with 11.6
and 5.0 seconds remaining in the game. The Pennsylvania Junior
Varsity team sank a three-point basket with 1.8 seconds left to
close out the scoring.
Manor opened the scoring early before the Junior Varsity
Quakers took the lead. Freshman guard/forward Eric
Trowery (Coatsville, PA/Strath Haven) sank two free throws
to give the Blue Jays an 18-17 lead with 11:52 left in the first
half. This was a lead that Manor held deep into the second half.
Including the free throws, the Blue Jays went on a 12-2 run over
the next 2:59 to extend the lead to 28-19 with 8:53 left. The host
Junior Varsity Quakers closed the gap to 31-24 with 7:35 remaining
before sophomore forward/guard Christopher Lawhorn
(Philadelphia, PA/Freire Charter) hit a pair of free
throws with 7:09 left that began a 12-0 run over the next 1:46 by
Manor to increase the lead to 43-24 with 5:23 remaining. The
19-point lead was the largest of the game for the Blue Jays.
Scoring came from a pair of three-point plays by Brown (he
also had a four-point play during this stretch) and freshman guard
William Shank (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann Goretti).
The Junior Varsity Quakers got as close as 43-30 with 3:48
remaining. Putbacks on consecutive possessions by Brown and Trowery
increased the lead to 47-30 with 2:39 left. Sophomore guard
Mark Perez (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic)
knocked down a three-point basket with 0:54 left to give Manor a
52-35 lead. The Blue Jays led 52-37 at halftime.
Shank’s putback gave Manor a 58-44 with 18:01 left
to go in the game. The Junior Varsity Quakers went on a 12-0 run of
their own over the next 5:02 to close the lead to 58-56 with 12:59
remaining. Lawhorn’s three-point basket at the top of the key
with 12:16 left stopped the bleeding. This started a 10-2 run that
cumulated with a Brown dunk off of a steal to increase the Blue
Jays lead to 68-58 with 6:32 remaining. However, the Junior Varsity
Quakers went on an 11-1 run to tie the game at 69 on a layup with
3:15 left. The score remained the same until the final 1:20.
In addition to Brown’s 30 points, double-figured scoring
also came from Shank who contributed 17 and Lawhorn added 13. The
Junior Varsity Quakers were led by Matt Paplowski (21) and Matt
Hennessian (19).
Manor improved its road record to 4-7 and its non-Region 19
Division II mark to 4-5 on the season. The Blue Jays finishes its
non-Region 19 Division II schedule with a visit to Valley Forge
Military College on Saturday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. This is a
make-up game from December 10, 2013 when the game was postponed due
to snow.
