MANOR BLANKED BY NATIONALLY-RANKED NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN REGION XIX DIVISION III OPENER

BETHLEHEM, PA—Northampton Community College (14-2 Overall, 1-0 Region XIX Division III) sophomore pitchers Trevor McGee and Michael Perreault and freshman David Smith scattered three Manor College (2-8, 0-1) singles as the seventh-ranked Spartans shut out the Blue Jays, 13-0, in seven innings, in a Region XIX Division III opener for both schools.

Manor put baserunners in scoring position in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.  The Blue Jays got hits from sophomore second baseman Sauriel Baez (Philadelphia, PA/Esperanza Charter) (none out, fifth inning), sophomore catcher Abimael Mercado (Philadelphia, PA/Juan Ponce De Leon [PR]) (none out, fifth inning), and freshman third baseman Eddie Colon (Philadelphia, PA/Olney Charter) (one out, seventh inning).

Northampton opened up the scoring with six runs in the second on four hits and batted around in the inning.  Spartan RBI contributions were made by sophomore designated hitter Tyler Horvath (double), sophomore second baseman CJ Gantz (two-run single), and sophomore left fielder Corey Stouffer (single).

Spartans' sophomore shortstop Christopher Smith hit a three-run home run in the third.

Northampton finished off its scoring in the fifth with four runs on two hits and sent a dozen hitters to appear in the inning.  Spartan RBI in this inning were made by freshman third baseman-shortstop by Starlin Solis Solano (double) and Stouffer (ground out).

Batting Leaders: Sophomore shortstop Jose Romero (Philadelphia, PA/Frankford) walked twice and stole a base. Baez, Colon, and Mercado also walked for the Blue Jays.

Gantz stole two bases, scored twice, and knocked in two runs.  Smith scored three runs and had contributed three RBI.  Horvath contributed two doubles and scored three runs.  Stouffer added two hits and two RBI.  Solis Solano contributed two hits and scored twice.  Sophomore Tommy Dunleavy walked twice for the Spartans.

Pitching Leaders: Freshman Briant Loya (Philadelphia, PA/Parkway Center City) (1-2) started the game.  Freshman relief pitcher Yadier Cedeno (Philadelphia, PA/Olney Charter) finished the game for the Blue Jays.

McGee (1-1) started the game and struck out four in four innings for the Spartans.

Next Game: Manor hosts NJCAA Region XIX Division III Delaware County Community College in its home opening doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 at Noon at Lighthouse Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The Blue Jays lost both games to the Phantoms, 20-13 (at Delaware County on April 19, 2018), and 14-12, (on May 4, 2018) at the Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.

Next Road Game: Manor plays a NJCAA Region XIX Division III doubleheader at the Union County College Owls on Sunday, March 31 at Warinanco Park in Roselle, New Jersey at Noon.  This doubleheader was rescheduled from Saturday, March 16.
